Need a cheap but cheerful centerpiece?

Wednesday May 26, 2004
Who says that a centerpiece has to be a $100+ arrangement of flowers? If you're looking to save money, try one of these ideas.

* Use ceramic flower pots of cat grass (also known as wheatgrass), a chic modern look that's cheap as well. For a cheerful look, Make construction paper flowers on thin wooden dowels and have a calligrapher or friend with good handwriting write the table number in the center. Or, go for a streamlined look with wooden boxes of cat grass surrounded by lots of votive candles on glass dishes. Our local farmer's market sells cat grass, but it's very easy to grow.

* Candles are cheap and chic, and will give your room a romantic feel. Choose candles of varying heights and put them on a mirrored glass dish, available at craft stores and typically for rent from your caterer.

* Purchase glass bowls, even one's as simple as these and tell your florist you'll need three to five perfect rose blooms, camellias, or gardenias per table. Float the blooms in water, being careful not to bruise the blooms.

* Be creative with your materials. Think about substituting a vase filled with cranberries, a bowl of perfect lemons and/or limes, or jars of penny candy for flowers.
