Donald and Melania Tie the Knot, and Count the Change
Tuesday January 25, 2005
Following in Star Jones's footsteps, Donald Trump and supermodel Melania Knauss were married this weekend in an opulent, over-the-top style wedding, covered in flowers, designer dresses and jewels. And to make sure they filled those footprints completely, Donald and Melania found out just how much they could get for free, or at least a sizeable discount. Her Christian Dior couture dress, although worth over $150,000, probably was sold to her for a large discount after appearances in Vogue and the Today Show. Catering for the 400 guests, by celebrated chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, was completely free. Everything else about the wedding has been splashed over the pages of magazines and newspapers, giving ample attention to all the vendors. Perhaps most importantly, Trump's new $42 million dollar ballroom at the Mar-a-lago resort is getting plenty of press as a venue for weddings. And I'm sure their 400 guests, including former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, Billy Joel, Tony Bennett, Russell Simmons, Katie Couric, Matt Lauer and Barbara Walters - not to mention Star Jones herself - all forked over big bucks for wedding gifts.
Both Star Jones and Donald Trump's wedding style - spend a fortune, but get at least half for free - has been criticized loudly in the media, including by your's truly. But you may recall that about a year ago, I wrote about a new trend of ordinary couples getting their weddings sponsored. Other couples find creative ways of getting their weddings paid for, including begging and borrowing. So what do you think? Is it wrong for celebrities to trade on their hard-earned name for a discount on their wedding day? Sound off in the forums!
