Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles to Marry

Thursday February 10, 2005
Are you ready for another Royal wedding? Prince Charles surprised England today by announcing that he and Camilla Parker Bowles will marry on April 8th. Parker Bowles has been Prince Charles's long-time girlfriend and is widely believed to have been his mistress while he was still married to Princess Diana. This marriage is a sensitive issue because Camilla is divorced from her first husband, who is still living, and many Anglicans frown on divorce. If Charles becomes King, she will be known as Princess Consort, rather than Queen Camilla.

Unfortunately, I doubt we can get excited for the pomp and circumstance that accompanied Charles and Diana's wedding. This wedding will be a civil ceremony, followed by a "prayer and dedication" ceremony presided over by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Furthermore, Parker Bowles is older than Diana was, and prefers simple things to the Hollywood glamor that Diana loved. Nevertheless, we'll all be waiting to see which designer Parker Bowles chooses, and what her dress will look like.
