Wedding guides will often tell you that you have to include lots of traditions and spend lots of money. But what if those details aren't that important to you, or you're operating on a limited budget? Here are ideas and tips to get you started thinking about a casual wedding. But the most important tip is to remember that it's your wedding, and in the end you can do it any way you want to.

My daughter is planning to get married in the summer of 2008. She has said that she would like to have a casual beach wedding. I love to dress up. I cannot reconcile the ideas of casual and tasteful, or elegant. I want to give what she wants, but it’s going to be a stretch for me to wrap my mind around this idea. I see casual as sloppy. Just wearing something you already have in your closet is not special to me. Can you help me to embrace what my daughter wants.

casual weddings done right are never sloppy! they’re more inviting and can be more remembered by the guests. wouldn’t it be nicer to have them thinking that the wedding was so fitting to the personalities of the bride and groom, rather than a lavish gaudy affair? i’ll be getting married summer of 2009 and can’t imagine having a giant formal wedding. i feel like i’m going to be able to enjoy myself a lot more if i’m not worried about my aisle runner matching my pew flowers and if the groomsmen should have vests or not…. oy! all of it is overwhelming! your daughter may want to do this in a way that is most comfortable and special to her. though i think you should sway her on wearing a dress she already has. she can get a great new dress in a style she likes that fits her idea of the perfect wedding and it can still be casual. no one says you HAVE to wear a bridal gown!
