How Long Do You Have?

This is one of the big questions of wedding etiquette, that many, even experts, seem to disagree on - How long do you have to give or acknowledge a wedding gift? I tend to be on the liberal side of things, understanding that people have busy lives and they should fit things in when they can. I admit that it makes things slightly more inconvenient - wondering if your friends received your gift, or wondering if you should complete your registry yourself. So I understand that others may disagree with me. But I want to know what you think. How long do you have to give a wedding gift or send wedding thank you cards?
