Good Questions: Are Destination Weddings Really Cheaper?

By July 25, 2007

Follow me on:

Jamie writes: "My fiance is trying to convince me to have a destination wedding; apparently he read in the newspaper that they're cheaper. I just don't understand how that's possible. Isn't it the same as a wedding near home, plus the cost of our travel? We're on a tight budget, so I want to make sure I use my money wisely!"

Destination weddings can be cheaper, or they can be vastly more expensive. Many all-inclusive resorts will throw in the cost of your wedding ceremony, or extras like free wedding cake when you have a certain number of guests staying there. Others will include your entire wedding meal. And, if you're going to a foreign country with a good exchange rate, you can find even more savings. On the other hand, many couples don't want the impersonal feel of an all-inclusive resort. At a regular hotel, it's unlikely you'll get many free extras. And airfare, as you know, is expensive. If any of your guests need you to help them with their travel costs, your budget will get spent quickly. Some couples even pay the travel costs of everyone involved.

I think you should have a destination wedding only if that's the kind of wedding you truly want to have. Read my advice on finding out Is a Destination Wedding Right For You?". And you'll probably also want to check out Top 10 Ways to Save Money on Your Wedding.

Totally agree with you on this one — only do it if it’s what you want to have.
