Your wedding might just be the most photographed event of your life. (Although judging by friends of mine who have recently had kids and have digital cameras, the first two weeks of someone's life might soon surpass this!) Many couples I know are choosing to do an engagement session before the wedding. It's great for save-the-dates and wedding websites, and it gives you a chance to get to know a photographer before the big day.

Engagement photo sessions typically cost a few hundred dollars (depending on your area.) This is a thoughtful gift that will have long-lasting benefits. If you know a couple getting married soon, consider giving them the gift of an engagement photo session. Top 5 Wedding Gift Ideas

My maid of honor gave me a trash the dress photo shoot with Chicago wedding photographer Jody Garland for after my wedding. Visit http://www.chicagotrashthedress.com to see some of the most fun original post wedding portraits. It was incredibly fun and a gift that will last forever. The dress was unharmed just a little dry cleaning and good as new.

Engagement photo sessions are also a fabulous time to practice your makeup techniques and see how your makeup looks in professionally shot pictures. If the photographer is using a digital camera you can always ask them to start with a close up of your face. Then look at the image and decide if you are happy with your makeup. If you need to make an adjustment or two it can be done before the next photo is taken, and you’ll be sure to love your portrait.
