Hot or Not: Is This an Ugly Bridesmaid Dress?

Tuesday September 30, 2008
JCrew usually does a good job with their bridesmaid dresses. But when they updated their site this week, I couldn't believe they were actually advocating brides choose the Fontaine dress for their bridesmaids. First of all, it costs $650, way too much unless the couple is footing the bridal party's attire bill. Can you imagine your friend telling you that you need to spend that much money, just for your bridesmaid dress?

Second of all, it might just be the least flattering dress ever. JCrew Fontaine Dress

Seriously, anyone who doesn't have a totally flat belly would look ridiculous with all those ruffles. And the bodice isn't doing anything good for this model's curves. But is it just me? Would you all wear this dress?

(2) Lisa says:

I don’t know, I kind of like it. At least it isn’t the same old boring dress. But you’re right that $650 is too much for a bridesmaid dress, especially in this economy.

(9) Melissa Nyssen says:

I really like most of J.crews bridal dresses, but this one looks like a mop.

October 2, 2008 at 1:42 pm
(10) Aero702 says:

The color of the dress is really nice. The style…not so much. The worst part however is the hideous blue shoes. What’s up with that?!?!?!

October 2, 2008 at 1:51 pm
(11) Barbara says:

WAY over priced and double ugly

October 2, 2008 at 1:53 pm
(12) Jody says:

Honestly? That is AWFUL!

October 2, 2008 at 2:06 pm
(13) Lori says:

This looks horrible on her. I can only imagine what it would look like on someone that weights more than 100lbs.

October 2, 2008 at 2:15 pm
(14) BBF says:

I’m laughing as I imagine any of my friends looking at that dress and looking at me wondering if I need to be committed. It’s horrid and extremely overpriced. The blue shoes are the icing on the ugly cake!

October 2, 2008 at 2:18 pm
(15) ALAN.BELAFSKY says:

THE.HECK.WITH.ALL.OF.YOU.OUT.THERE.I.LIKE.IT.BUT.IT.IS.WAY.OVER.CHARGED.AND.THE.SHOES.DON’T
GO.WITH.THAT.DRESS.

October 2, 2008 at 2:31 pm
(16) Kathy says:

I like it. The color is fabulous too! I think it would actually hide a little stomach pooch but you really couldn’t be more than 20 lbs overweight for it to work. And why oh why DID they choose those shoes that OBVIOUSLY do not match at all!!??

October 2, 2008 at 2:53 pm
(17) Lee says:

I agree with Alan.Belafsky. I like it. I could never wear it, but I like it. Except for the price. And what’s up with those shoes? Now those are REALLY ugly!

October 2, 2008 at 2:54 pm
(18) Niecy says:

That dress puts the UGH in ugly! And to pay $650 for something that will have my wedding pics proving that I 1) don’t have very good taste or 2) have to go to great lengths to make sure my bridesmaids don’t outshine me on my day is just too much. LOL

October 2, 2008 at 2:54 pm
(19) RosaRosa says:

A waste of beautiful fabric.

October 2, 2008 at 2:58 pm
(20) Meg says:

My first thought was that it looks like an adult version of a flower girl’s dress, so in children’s sizing it would be…perfect. But yes, it doesn’t bring _any_ sexy to the bridesmaid’s body.

October 2, 2008 at 3:08 pm
(21) Lee says:

I wouldn’t even wear that to a dog show!!!
UGLY!!!

October 2, 2008 at 3:31 pm
(22) KRITTER says:

OMG that is terrible! That dress is for a bridezilla that wants to make her bridal party look rediculous so she will look better! Plus…gotta love the blue shoes with the green dress. The designer must be colorblind!

October 2, 2008 at 8:07 pm
(23) DENNIS KUTACH says:

UGLY !!! OH PLEASE !!!
IT LOOKS LIKE A VEGETABLE !!!!
AND $650!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

October 2, 2008 at 8:12 pm
(24) INFINITY says:

NICE PETTICOAT….WHERE’S THE DRESS ?

October 2, 2008 at 8:27 pm
(25) Johanne says:

That is very ugly. A skinny or fat person would not look good in this dress. It does nothing for any body.Maybe on a scarecrow. I hope it is not an upcoming designer I hope this was for fun. Nobody will buy or look at that dress.

October 2, 2008 at 11:06 pm
(26) Deborah says:

I was a Bridesmaid years ago in Oregon and the dress was a beautiful blue color and I loved that dress. My niece played dress up in it for years when I brought it home. This dress looks like something out of “Nightmare from Elm Street and that’s no kidding!” Ugly!

(27) Kulwant Singh says:

October 3, 2008 at 1:43 am
(28) Manon says:

I like the shoes, and that’s about the only good thing in that picture. The dress looks like a bag on top and a mop on the bottom.

October 3, 2008 at 3:07 am
(29) Deanna says:

Stacy and Clinton would say that the shoes are perfect because they make the outfit POP!!! No comment on the dress…..but too expensive!

October 3, 2008 at 4:44 am
(30) Naomi says:

Why should my bride’s maids wear something that would imply that my marriage wont last long?

October 3, 2008 at 12:04 pm
(31) Daniella says:

I think it’s fantastic. But you’re right in saying that it would hardly be an easy thing to request your bridesmaids to help so much, and spend $650 on a dress on top of it all. As for the design, however, it’s stunning. Formal, yet the tea-length lends a casual nature to it. Not everyone can wear this dress, to be sure, but the point is not who thinks you look good – it’s whether you FEEL good! I think the piece is great, but it’s all about opinion.

October 3, 2008 at 2:31 pm
(32) Cinde says:

Expensive and ugly. What were they thinking when they designed/priced this?

October 3, 2008 at 3:19 pm
(33) tj says:

This dress is hideous. Makes her look flat as a board on top and big as a house on the bottom. Not flattering for any woman.

October 3, 2008 at 4:37 pm
(34) Ashley says:

I think it’s great.
The problem is the length; it’s just one ruffle tier too long. That length is the worst lenth for almost everyone.
But I like the design, it hides a lot of un flattering areas.

October 5, 2008 at 12:14 am
(35) Vanessa says:

I agree with the last post if this gown was shorter, maybe strapless and black it could possibly work! As for the blue shoes…random very random but if it what the bride wants ad luck bridesmaids he he he.

October 6, 2008 at 8:36 pm
(36) Cassie says:

wow! that idk what to say about that…it’s horrible…I would hate my bridesmaids if I made them wear that…

October 7, 2008 at 9:19 am
(37) BRITTNEY says:

AINT NO WAY THUS BITCH HOT
NOT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I WOULD NEVER WEAR THIS DRESS

October 7, 2008 at 4:53 pm
(38) amanda says:

hellllllllll no i would never where or make my bridesmaids wear that ugly thing.was the designer drunk when he/she made that dress? lol. it doesnt even look nice. now maybe for halloween…… lol :)

October 9, 2008 at 12:31 am
(39) Rosemarie says:

First off, where’d those blue shoes come from? With a greenish-black (can you say “brackish”) dress? I’d rather have a dress the color of the shoes!

Secondly, ALL the decoration is below the waist. No ruffles, lace, scallops, nothing but a tank top for the top half!

Third, as has been repeatedly noted, hardly any figure type would be flattered by this style.

Bad color, bad style, bad accessories – what’s to like?

October 10, 2008 at 8:54 pm
(40) searchingbride says:

i think the dress is much to HAUTE for a bridesmaid..way more red carpet then church aisle. Its interesting to look at, fascinating design..but i wouldnt make my bridesmaids EVER wear that lol and its waayy to expensive

(46) gabbi and ashley says:

November 24, 2008 at 2:23 pm
(47) megan says:

is she about to bust out in a salsa dance? i don’t see how that dress can flatter anyone’s body. it hides or smooshes any curves one might have. however, i do like the color. and the shoes, too. just not together.

December 22, 2008 at 6:49 pm
(48) Emma says:

Actually, the fontaine dress (as bridesmaid or any other) is really in fashion right now. And, have you tried the dress on? It’s absolutely beautiful and the structure of the bodice fits extremely well.

January 10, 2009 at 9:25 am
(49) Wedding Stamps says:

I’d have to see it on my bridesmaids…or myself first. And I guess it would depend on the theme of the wedding…

January 16, 2009 at 10:11 pm
(50) kristi says:

I paid that much for my WEDDING dress, I can’t imagine asking my bridesmaids to pay that much!! What in the world? And it is extremely unflattering. If it can’t make a model look good, it isn’t going to make ANYONE look good.

January 17, 2009 at 6:52 pm
(51) tara says:

can you say..feather duster?

April 19, 2009 at 4:14 pm
(52) iamjenniejin@yahoo.com says:

Omg! This is the kind of dress that a bridesmaid wears as a joke. Seriously if I had someone that I had a grudge against, I would make them a BM and make them wear this dress. Im saving the style number if I ever need revenge.
