What Are Your New Year's Resolutions?

Thursday January 1, 2009
Every year, people resolve to lose 50 pounds, save lots of money, quit smoking, and other well-meaning but rarely completed promises. While I'd love for everyone to get healthy both physically and fiscally, there are some resolutions that you might actually complete, and will help you have a fabulous wedding. Here are my suggestions for New Year's Resolutions for those who are engaged:

1) Kiss each other more frequently. This is a fun resolution to keep - who doesn't like kissing? But kissing each other more frequently will also help keep you connected and sane during wedding planning.

2) Celebrate your friends. You're asking your friends and family to spend lots of money on your special day, most of which they will spend telling you how awesome you are. The least you can do is make sure you spend the year telling them how much they mean to you. Once a week, send an email to a long-lost friend, pick up a small trinket for someone you see frequently, or just spend a lunch date truly listening, rather than rambling on about wedding plans.

3) Get in Motion. There's something that bothers me about the traditional "Get Skinny" resolution. It's this far-off goal that involves a fair amount of self-hatred to achieve. Instead, why not resolve to move more? When you drive, park in the farthest parking space so you get in a little walking. Jog to the convenience store instead of hopping in your car. And when you take the bus, get off a few stops early. Why is this a good resolution for engaged couples? Moving increases your endorphins, so you'll be happier. Getting out of the car and into the world always makes me feel less stressed. And it's a positive resolution, rather than a negative one. And let's face it, engaged couples need all the positivity they can get.
