2009 Color of the Year - Mimosa

Friday January 2, 2009
Pantone Mimosa I've been telling you that yellow is a great wedding color for several years, but 2009 might just be the best year for yellow ever. Pantone, one of the leading global authorities on color, has named "mimosa" its top color of the year.

This highly saturated color is filled with sunshine and optimism so it's perfect for your happy wedding day. But, it's also easy for it to become overwhelming and jarring. Here are a few ways to incorporate this color tastefully:
  • Bridesmaid dresses. Do NOT send your bridesmaids dressed head-to-toe in yellow. That's meanness best reserved for bad wedding comedy movies. Bright yellow is a very hard color to wear, and tends to make most women look sallow and washed out. Not to mention, any larger women will look more like Big Bird than a dainty maid. Instead, use this color as an accent color. I told you in my 2009 wedding trends that grey is going to be a huge wedding color this year. Give the women grey dresses with yellow sashes, and the men gray suits with yellow ties and yellow boutonnieres. They'll all be happy at having something they can really wear again, rather than just a halloween costume.

  • Flowers. There are tons of beautiful yellow flowers for weddings, but yellow mimosa is a great addition to centerpieces as it adds a great hit of color and a beautiful drape.

  • Table Settings. A room full of bright yellow tables can be overwhelming. And, since few rental houses stock such saturated colors, you'll pay extra for those tables. Instead, choose a dove gray or off-white tablecloth, then add touches of bright yellow in the menu cards, centerpieces, or wedding favors.

  • Invitations. When your guests open a cheery mimosa yellow invitation, they'll know they're in for a fun and happy event. I'm in love with these letterpressed invitations by Brooklyn invitation designers Swayspace but there are many other affordable options.

What do you think about this color?

Hi I live in Zimbabwe where yellow is seldom used. I think It will be a unique wedding decor and colour scheme especially with the grey mix

The mimosa tree actually has flower that are that shade of yellow, but the more popular Mimosa pudica plant has pink flowers. It too is being very popular as seen in botanical gardens as the TickleMe Plant. It really does close its leaves and lowers its branches when Tickled. I hope with the popular Mimosa color more kids learn about the Mimosa pudica and grow a tickleme plant. Its so much fun
