Cheap Wedding Fridays Tip #20: Doing Your Own Wedding Makeup

Friday April 24, 2009
Makeupgeek.com***Warning*** - the site I'm about to share with you is so much fun that you will inevitably spend a lot of time reading through all the archives and watching the videos. I can't be held responsible if you miss an important meeting or doctor's appointment! When I first found it, I was so engrossed I forgot to eat dinner or feed my cats!

Who says you can't DIY your wedding makeup? Sure a professional can help you get a polished look, but you might also feel like a stranger when you look in the mirror. And, you can probably achieve satisfactory results for much less money. For my wedding, I went to MAC store about 6 months before my wedding, got a free makeover, and bought many of the products they recommended. That way I not only was able to do my own wedding makeup, but I was able to use those products for my bridal shower, rehearsal dinner, and other wedding related events.

Though it worked out well, I still wish I'd had the advice and careful tutorials of Marlena, otherwise known as the Makeup Geek. On her website, she posts video step-by-step tutorials of how to create hundreds of different makeup looks, including how to correctly even out your skin tone, tips for making your cheekbones higher and your face thinner, and many ways to layer and blend different colors of eye-shadow to get professional-like results. She even has a tutorial just on wedding day makeup. Though I'd still probably feel like a stranger if I were wearing as much makeup as Marlena recommends, by following the tutorial I can understand how to get those results, and then tweak them in a way that feels more like me.

I think checking out online makeup tutorials is so much fun and so key to getting the makeup results that you want, that I added her site as a tip to my Countdown to Wedding Day Beauty

If you get a free makeover as a way to saving money on your wedding, be sure to only purchase the products you really need, and keep an eye on your budget. You might also enlist a trusted friend to come along and be an extra pair of eyes and hands. Are you doing your own wedding day makeup?

(1) Postage For Wedding Invitations says:

I love sites with video tutorials on stuff like this. It’s so much easier than simply reading a how to list. Most of the brides I know have actually done their own wedding day makeup, although I did work in a store when I was younger and sometimes saw brides coming with their wedding parties on the wedding day and have the makeover done right at the cosmetics counter.
