The Worst Wedding Food?

Today's earlier post (which asked you all to be inspired about your wedding food) naturally reminded me of all the weddings I've been to where the food was anything *but* inspired. The worst was probably a wedding at a hotel a few years ago, where the only thing I found remotely edible was strangely the calamari. Everything else was horribly overcooked, bland, and displayed in huge portions which remained uncomfortably clammy. A note to that hotel staff: Spaghetti should not be mushy. A strand should not break into four pieces when you try to pick it up. Need I say more?
But perhaps the worst tale I've heard of wedding food is from a friend, who reported that a recent wedding, which took place at a strip-mall catering hall, tried so hard to look fancy and yet was so obviously cheap. Tiny portions of chicken were dust-dry, while the beef was so tough it was literally impossible to cut it with the knife. But surely that can't be the worst wedding food you've ever experienced. I'd love to hear your tales of strange concoctions and terrible caterers!

Not too long ago, my mother attended a wedding where the dinner entree consisted of: 2 Swedish meatballs, 2 chicken winglets & ice tea. Period.
I’m not sure how the food tasted, but for a wedding, that menu was horrible!
I was recently at a wedding where the parents, who are both good cooks, were responsible for much of the cooking. The menu was very cracker barrel-esque, and while the individual dishes were delicious, altogether it was a very heavy meal. The dinner menu consisted of chicken cordon bleu, roast beef, scalloped potatoes, MASHED potatoes, corn pudding, and various kinds of bread. There were also green beans, but they were DROWNED in butter.
For someone like me, who eats a balanced and healthy diet, that kind of unmitigated starchfest is not even tasty. I ate small portions but still felt ill. The bride was having a nausea spell, and her mother couldn’t entice her to eat any of the food being served – no wonder! I would have swapped one of the potato dishes for some plain steamed veggies, for example.
They also only had SUPER-sugary lemonade, punch, or plain water as drink options. I’d want some kind of unsweetened or moderately sweet option.
For a morning wedding we attended, we were served fried rice, sausage in cream sauce on biscuits, scrambled eggs, bread and butter, bran muffins, tiny wieners in a tomato sauce and meatballs in a sweet and sour sauce.
I haven’t been to a wedding with bad food (yet), but I do have a question, and this seems that this is as good a place as any to pose this:
My friend is getting married in a little over a year and is trying to keep her costs low. She is thinking of having a potluck reception. What bothers me the most about this is that I feel that this is somewhat tacky and also unrealistic, considering their combined guest list is in the ballpark of 75-85 guests. Am I overthinking this, or is there a better way that I could suggest she cut costs?
