Tacky Tacky Tacky: Ivanka Trump's Wedding Invitation

Thursday October 29, 2009

By all accounts, Ivanka Trump's recent wedding to New York Observer owner Jared Kushner was elegant and lovely. Barbara Walters called the wedding, held at the Trump National Golf Course in New Jersey, "gorgeous" but "not glitzy". The 500 guests, who included many bold-faced names, watched the ceremony on the golf-course against a backdrop of colorful fall leaves before retiring to an Preston Bailey-designed reception dripping with white roses.

It was a tastefully traditional wedding. But then, why I am complaining about tackiness? The wedding invitations were also tasteful and traditional, engraved gold script on white stock with both English and Hebrew. But included in the envelope were reportedly advertisements for Donald Trump's golf courses. If Donald Trump weren't the king of self-promotion, I would never believe that his well-mannered daughter would allow such a thing. I've told readers a hundred times: don't put any ads or notices for your registry in your invitations. Doing so implies that they are required to give you a gift, which shouldn't be true. But I never thought I needed to warn couples not to include advertisements for businesses like their fathers' golf courses. Will wonders never cease!

I would have to attend to agree with you here on this situation. I would say that it was poor decision-making process for this wedding to include advertisements or anything about the registry in wedding invitations.

The whole idea of inviting guests to the wedding is to enjoy their wedding day, sharing moments with family and friends, and should never feel “obligated” to make a purchase for the couple. This is why I strongly suggest brides and grooms to create a website for that type of information, and not to include it on your wedding invitations.
