Reader Question: Easy Wedding Programs?

Thursday April 24, 2008
Gurkan writes:
I am getting married in about 16 days, and it's my job to create the wedding programs. I have read your helpful article, Essential Elements of a Wedding Program, but I am stuck trying to figure out how to find the materials I need to start with. What kind of paper should I use? Are there blank ones available that I can just grab and fill it out ? Or should I just sit down and write everything down in Word?
Gurkan, there are blank ones available. Cranes makes a nice DIY Program Kit that is simple and elegant. We also found these program kits from a company we've not used before. These seem very pretty, although it is unclear if they include any templates.

If you have Word and other Microsoft programs, there are many free downloadable templates available online. Don't have time to order special paper? Ask at your copy center for the paper they recommend - typically a thick resume-type paper is used.

Readers? Any tips for Gurkan?

Use your friends’ talents. Wedding services are expensive. Your friends can help with that expense. Say your sister’s boyfriend is a really talented graphic design major in college. Instead of dropping 1k on wedding programs/invitations, consider having him design them and give him money for printing. With him being a graphic designer, he probably knows some good places for printing and nice paper to print them on. Now that you’ve saved so much, tip him! Even include his name on the programs/invitations for props. It will give him some grocery money plus add another piece to his portfolio. Who knows, he may even be able to turn it in as a project! Your invitations will probably look better than you expected and it will be extra personal.

print them yourself. how many times do you think back to your friends weddings and remember the programs??? type out an order of events - enough to help people follow along - and then go take some time for yourself! thats way more important than detailed programs!

Before printing your wedding programs or having them printed by a third party, I strongly recommend that you consult with your House of Worship to determine if they have any specific program requirements. We have often found that most Churches and Synagogues have fairly specific procedural and wording requirements for wedding programs printed outside their domain.

Oh goodness, Joanne fabrics has a fantastic printable kit. The more elaborate kit comes with beautiful invitations with inner pockets. Inside each slit is it’s own personal card detailing, “directions” and “RSVP” card. There are dozens of styles from simple to elegant. A box of 50 is $39.99. Inside is a booklet of wording examples. Just choose on and you are done.
