In a surprise move, Britney Spears was married January 3, 2004 in Las Vegas at 5:30 a.m. According to news reports, Britney, 22, married Jason Allen Alexander, also 22, -- a childhood friend from her hometown of Kentwood, LA. George Maloof Jr., owner of the Palms Casino Hotel, confirmed the news. Mr. Maloof, reportedly a good friend of Britney's, told the A.P. "Nobody knew it was coming."
The bride wore jeans and a baseball cap; a hotel employee walked her down the aisle. Hardly the extravagant wedding one would expect from the pop princess who regularly drops thousands and thousands on outfits.
However, it appeared from reports that the wedding was very spontaneous. According to people.com, Britney and Jason went to the Little White Wedding Chapel (after a stop at the trendy Ghostbar), yet the couple didn't have a wedding license. So a limo took them to the Clark County Marriage Bureau Office where they were granted a license before returning to the chapel for the ceremony. Some have speculated that this was a drunken mistake, a la Carmen Electra and Dennis Rodman's own trip to the Little White Wedding Chapel. Yet given the time it took to go through all the steps of obtaining a license and actually getting married, it seems doubtful that they were drunk by the time they said "I do."
By the time the news had reached most office water cooler gossip zones, new news reported that the wedding was alas, no more. (I've heard of brief marriages, but this takes the cake!) Britney and Jason reportedly met with a lawyer later that day to file a fast annulment. Spears' record label, Jive, said in a statement: "On January 3, Britney Spears and a friend took a joke too far by getting married. Ms. Spears and Mr. Alexander have filed for an annulment which will become official on Monday, January 5."
"There are grounds for this court to grant an annulment because plaintiff Spears lacked understanding of her actions to the extent that she was incapable of agreeing to the marriage, the Plaintiff and Defendant did not know each others likes and dislikes, each others desires to have or not have children, and each others desires as to State of residency," the annulment papers said.
Since the annulment, Jason has obtained a top PR and marketing agent, and is making the rounds at talk shows. He says he hasn't spoken to Britney since their wedding day. But don't feel too sorry for him. Reportedly, one of the first projects for his agent, Ira Rainess, is to broker a $1 Million deal for a video of the pair getting married!
