When was the marriage proposal?

June 9, 2003

How long had you been dating previously?

Three years and nine months

How did your fiancé/fiancée pop the question?

When I was a sophomore in high school, I got asked out on a date for the first time. Josh was a senior at the time, and was very shy. I was the first girl he had ever asked out. Pretty soon we had been going out for one year, two years, and then three years. I wondered if we would get married. When I brought it up, he said that he would like to get married some day, but wasn’t going to make a move to officially propose anytime soon. We had been together for over three and a half years when he invited me – rather, he insisted that I go – on a Disney Cruise with him and his family. I agreed, figuring it would be lots of fun. I had traveled with them twice before, to Disneyland, so I thought I knew what to expect out of the trip. I wasn’t counting on it being incredibly romantic for the two of us. After all, our party had 12 people altogether and we didn’t even have our own cabin. I was pleased, however, when we were able to get a good deal of time alone, both on the ship and at the ports. One night, we skipped the rotational dining with the rest of our group and made reservations for the two of us at Palo’s, the specialty restaurant. It was on our day at sea, and we would be arriving in Grand Cayman the next morning. After a little while, one of the servers came over to our table and placed a large, wrapped box and a plastic light-up rose in front of me. At first I thought Josh had simply bought me a present and had sent it to the table, as a nice little surprise. Then he gets down on one knee and asks if I’ll marry him, in front of everyone at the restaurant! I said yes and everyone started clapping. I opened the box, and it was a statue of Minnie kissing sailor Mickey, and it said “Cruisemates”. The server then brought us two metal buttons that said “I’m Celebrating on Disney Cruise Lines” and a “Congratulations” cake. The following night we returned to the rotational dining with the rest of the group. Our regular server had heard of our engagement, and brought us another cake. Throughout the trip, people recognized us from the restaurant.

Did your fiancé/fiancée already have an engagement ring? What did it look like?

He's not the best person to rely on to plan things ahead of time, so no, he didn't have one when he proposed, LOL. After we got back home, he got me a "swirl" shaped white and yellow gold ring with little diamonds in it, and hearts stamped into the top and bottom. I liked it just fine, but he was obsessed with getting me an "expensive" ring (I drive him nuts sometimes because I am such a cheapskate, LOL). He was set on it, and certain people making rude comments about how small the diamonds in my ring were (i.e. my grandma) just made him more determined, even though I didn't have a real problem with it. So when he could afford it he got me a really pretty yellow gold ring with a marquise diamond in the center that's surrounded by 18 smaller, round diamonds. I wear both of them all the time.
