An Antique Engagement Ring and a Casual Proposal

I love my ring!

Tell us about your ring, and any stories behind it.

My dad died two months before we got engaged. We went back to the small town he had lived in and bought it from an antique store there. I always feel like my dad is with me when I look at the ring.

Describe the proposal! Was it a surprise? Romantic?

I had picked him up at the airport and we were driving home. As we were driving he casually said, "I almost bought you a ring but I didn't know what size to get." To which I replied, "What kind of ring?" "You know, an engagement ring." I almost drove off the road!

Do you love your engagement ring? Be honest!

I do. It is not huge or flashy but it means more to me than I can ever express.

What's your favorite part about your engagement ring?

That it is from the town where my dad lived before he died, and that it is an antique which means it is not adding to the demand for blood diamonds.

We got engaged on:

OMG, I can't believe I don't remember the exact date! It was in the first week of April this year.

My engagement ring was purchased at:

A little antique store in Gibson's Landing, BC. Gibson's Landing is about a 30 minute drive and a 35 minute ferry ride from Vancouver, BC. The ring is an antique so it was previously owned, but by whom I don't know. Whomever passed this on to the store, I am very grateful. I love my ring!

Advice

  • get what you want and looks beautiful to you.
  • bigger isn't necessarily better - the ring just has to be right.
  • if you have any doubts about the man you are going to marry, don't do it! I knew with my first marriage that it was a mistake and I still went ahead. This time, I'm sure.
  • Think to yourself, 'If I had a daughter, would I want her to marry this man?' If the answer is no, walk away.
  • make your wedding what you want, don't let others dictate to you.
