Unity Candle Ceremonies
Friday March 31, 2006
Many people believe that a wedding is not just a marriage of two people; it is the marriage of two families and two communities. This is why many couples choose to include unity candle ceremonies in their weddings. Typically, this ceremony involves the parents of each couple each lighting a candle, and then the couple using those candles to light a central unity candle. However, there are many variations on this ceremony, using everything from roses to sand to rope and more. If you're thinking of including something like this in your wedding, check out this article on unity candles and other joining ceremonies.

Hello sweety,
I’m getting married aug 6, 2006. I was thinking of ways to include unity candles in my wedding, like lighting candles for those who are not living (such as his father), and also we have a one year old daughter that we also want to do something sacred with that makes us a family.
it is not the marriage of two families and two communities. it IS two people becoming one. that is what the unity candle SHOULD be symbolizing. Genesis 2:24 leave your family
While I understand where you are coming from, many people who incorporate unity candles are not Christians. I suppose this is a ceremony that can mean different things to different people.
