Was Barbara Bush's Maid-of-Honor Dress Tacky?

Monday May 12, 2008
Bush Family Wedding Portrait - Getty ImagesAt Jenna Bush's wedding to Henry Hager last weekend, her twin sister Barbara was her maid-of-honor. Like the other bridesmaids, Barbara wore a Lela-Rose design. However, while theirs were short, and designed to look like the colors of Texas wildflowers, Barbara's was long and shimmery silver-white. So what's wrong with this picture? To me, Barbara looked just too bride-like. Her shimmery gown almost outshone Jenna's simple Oscar de la Renta wedding dress. The too-close-to-white color and the flowers in Barbara's hair have me wondering, "Who's the real bride here?" What do you all think? Could Barbara's dress have been redeemed if it were short, like the other bridesmaids' dresses?

I don’t like the gown. Not only is the color inappropriate but I don’t think it is flattering to her. She is a beautiful girl and the designer did not do her any favors. I still think Jenna’s gown is stunning and looks far superior to the other gown.

I agree with you, Nina. I don’t think that Barbara’s dress quite matched the style of the wedding either. Although, if that’s what Jenna was happy with, then more power to them. You never know- maybe Jenna wanted to see her twin shine as much as she did on her special day! Congrats Prez Bush - I still believe in ya!

I can’t imagine what they were thinking. The style is not attractive. She could have worn such a beautiful spring dress.

I agree with everyone. Only the bride should wear ivory, white or silver. However, since a wedding is all about the bride she can do whatever she wants!!!

I was a little taken aback when I saw her dress, but since the bride liked it, I say do want you want. Obviously, she didn’t mind her twin looking beautiful too on her wedding day, and I think that’s pretty sweet. The dress in itself is gorgeous - just doesn’t seem to fit the day.

NO! The style or the color is wrong. It doesn’t go with Jenna’s very stylish ,gorgeous elegant dress.

Well, Jenna looked GREAT ! Maybe she did want her twin to shine also, but this choice didn’t do the poor dear any favors. The color, style, length…and the ‘crown’ of flowers !?! Where was Grandma Bush to give her sensible advice ?
Thank heavens it all took place in Crawford, TX and NOT at the White House. At least she won’t be haunted by those photos - as part of the country’s history…

Why does her new husband favor her father only taller? Either way, it really doesnt even matter.

The bridegroom has rosy cheeks (interesting). The bridesmaid’s dress outdoes the bride’s - a no no; but one has to wonder if she has some other motive! Prez’s wife looks very dignified.

Barbara’s dress definitely calls for the attention. Bridesmaids are typically dressed to complement the bride, without overshadowing her. Although Jenna looked absolutely stunning, Barbara’s attire certainly won the spotlight…just maybe not for the right reasons. Barbara looks more like the greek goddess of bridemaids than a maid of honor.

Although the bride usually chooses the dresses and colors, somehow I don’t think this one was appropriate in style or color. I would have voted for short, blue, and skip the hair flowers. Guess they were ok with it all though…
