Let's face it. The economy sucks. And for those who are planning an important -- and expensive -- event like a wedding, it especially sucks. Worries over getting laid off, or how to pay for the wedding when you're unemployed can prevent you from the joy of planning the wedding of your dreams. But does that mean you should postpone or cancel the wedding? Here are my tips on how to deal with wedding planning during the recession, and when it might be time to postpone or cancel the wedding.

If you can’t afford the wedding you want, just make it smaller and less expensive. It’s more important to get married to the man you love than to throw a huge celebration. I would never cancel or postpone my wedding because of money!
There are many ways to downsize and do it yourself. You can get creative, but there are caveats. Read my DIY article on my site.
First, we know that he will be laid off within two months and that at 68 years old, it will be very difficult to find a new job. Second, we are working to pull in the belt in dozens of small and large ways as we can for shear living expenses. Third, we are delaying the wedding until we know if and when he may have to file for bankruptcy. Fourth, once we know WHEN, then we can put the plans into action. I will wear a dress I already own and love, a long cobalt and aqua rayon that has nice lines and drape. He will wear a suit he already has. My cousin/ bridesmaid may choose anything she wants in the way of a dress, including not buying new. One she has or gets second hand is fine, so long as it’s compatible color-wise. I have designed the invitations, a special design, color and format and will do up a sample for him for approval soon (and post it when we have them going)… I have about 2/3 of the materials for them, on sale. Cake will be a pro job, a friend who does this regularly on the side (she’s an accountant, “Not during tax season, however.”) A stepbrother has done wedding photography some, also as a side job. I’ll make the favors which will cost about $2 each (I’ll share photos and description when I have some done, and have several friends who’ve volunteered to help) Our church chapel holds about 50 comfortably, about 75 if you crowd and have SRO. Reception may be in the church hall, or eleswhere… we have a camping club membership but it might not be as convenient.. might marry there and have reception, but that part will be up to the season and other factors… it will be a potluck for food, wherever we do it… Flowers, bouquets simple and on the tables, jar candles from http://www.firelightcandles.com with small arrangements around them (I have bought from them and LOVE the fragrance and safety of the jar candles!) That will be my personal touch of luxury. I have other plans listed in a checklist… now, it’s just a matter of time when we can put it together!!!
Getting married abroad might be a way to save up on your wedding costs. Choosing a destination like Croatia for your wedding abroad gives you both exclusivity, style, romance, and something very extraordinary. Your very special day abroad get an entirely new dimension- at an amazing outdoor venue with your closest ones… Can it get any better and closer to exactly what you have always imagined your dream wedding to be.
One of the greatest expenses and sources of stress will be the sheer number of invitees. You’ll probably feel pressure from family to keep expanding the guest list but a sure way to keep that in check is to settle on a venue that can only accommodate the number of guests you feel comfortable with.
Hopefully relatives who are not assisting financially will understand.
Thinking of the wedding budget first is not the right approach…that will probably lead you to spend money you don’t have…just the opposite of what you would expect. I think couples should decide on what they want first and the figure out what version of that they can afford and how to accomplish it.
I’ve said that least 4410529 times. The problem this like that is they are just too compilcated for the average bird, if you know what I mean
