Reader Questions: When Addressing Wedding Invitations, Who Goes First?

By December 11, 2012

Follow me on:

Reader Shabbir asks:

How does one address wedding invitations - by Mrs. & Mr. or Mr. & Mrs?

Shabbir, I have to give you that most annoying answer, "It depends." Traditionally, wedding invitations are addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Husbandsfirstname Husbandslastname or Mr. and Mrs. John Smith. But if the wife has a professional title like doctor, the rules for addressing wedding invitations change. And, many couples feel that omitting the wife's first name is old-fashioned, and instead have adopted new rules for addressing wedding invitations. I hope that answers your questions, Shabbir!

If you have a wedding-related question, feel free to submit it and I hope I'll be able to help.  You might also find your answer by using the search box in the upper right of this page.
