How to Plan a Las Vegas Wedding

By , About.com Guide

Easy and Wedding aren't generally two words that go together. But in a Las Vegas wedding, easy isn't only possible, it's the norm. Running off to get hitched in Las Vegas is so popular because this fun loving Nevada city makes getting a marriage license so pain-free and fast. There's no waiting period and hundreds of wedding chapels are available for a quick and fun civil ceremony.

But along with the casinos and tourists are thousands of people who make this city their home. If you're looking to have a more traditional ceremony, with bridesmaids and flowers and the whole 9 yards, it's certainly possible to have an elegant Las Vegas wedding as well.

Here's my guide to planning a Las Vegas Wedding

Style:

The first decision to make is: Do you want an elegant and traditional ceremony or a fun, campy, easy Las Vegas wedding? Vegas is known for its quicky marriage licenses and plentiful chapels, so it's frequently the choice of couples who prioritize convenience over elegance, or who want a fun wedding from start to finish. But it's not impossible to have an elegant wedding here, or to have the best of both worlds.

Where to have a Las Vegas Wedding:

If you're looking for camp, you've got options aplenty. Check out this quick guide list of chapels.

For elegant options, the nicer hotels and resorts are among your best bets. About.com's Susan Breslow Sardone has compiled a list of her favorite elegant wedding locations in Las Vegas.

When:

Since temperatures frequently hit highs of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer, many couples opt to get married in spring or fall. However, people tend to spend 100% of their time here indoors and the city is pretty climate-controlled, so there's really no bad time of year to get married here.

Getting a Marriage License in Las Vegas

There's no blood test and no waiting period, but you still will need a marriage license. Your wedding chapel can help you with the steps, although some charge a fee for doing so. To do it yourself, go to the Las Vegas County Clerk's office. Bring proof of your age (like a driver's license), and know your social security number. If you've been previously married, you must also know the date, city, and state of your divorce. At this time, gay marriage is not legal in Nevada.
