Tell us about your ring, and any stories behind it.

My husband Will had my ring custom-made using stones from both of our families. My mom had a bracelet with several marquis shaped diamonds that my great-great uncle gave to his wife on their 50th anniversary. Will's mother gave him her grandmother's engagement ring with a round diamond.

Describe the proposal! Was it a surprise? Romantic?

We were about to leave for work on a Monday morning, he stopped me in the hallway & asked if I knew what day it was. I said "Monday" & he said, "Yes, & it's also the day that I realized I was in love with you a year ago. That day changed my life forever, & I want to change your life forever."

Do you love your engagement ring? Be honest!

I absolutely love it. The setting is elegant and beautiful without being too flashy, and the history behind the stones is something that I'll always be able to share with my children, and their children, and so on.

What's your favorite part about your engagement ring?

All of it - the history of the stones, the thought Will put in to designing it, what it symbolizes for us, and the design itself. It's perfect.

We got engaged on:

We were engaged on April 27, 2009 and married on Oct. 2, 2010

Using our families' stones, Will had the ring designed and made at Jewels That Dance in Asheville, NC. The ring has the round diamond from Will's great-grandmother's engagement ring between two of the marquis-shaped diamonds from my great-great uncle's 50th anniversary gift to his wife. The band is white gold, and the stones are in a prong setting which shows them off nicely.

Advice

  • A little planning goes a long way.
  • Talk to your family about any heirloom jewelry or rings that you may be able to use. It saves money and it's so much more meaningful.
  • Guys - Just say no to public proposals, especially if you haven't already talked about marriage to know that she's on board.
